Scorched ash with bark weaving

Material and Technique Scorched Ash Wood: Scorching Process: The ash wood used in this piece has undergone a scorching or charring process, which involves burning the surface of the wood to create a distinct darkened effect. This technique not only enhances the visual texture by bringing out the wood grain but also adds durability to the surface by slightly sealing it through the heat treatment. Grain Enhancement: The natural grain of ash wood is known for its prominent, open grain patterns. When scorched, the lighter spring growth rings become more pronounced against the darker summer growth rings, creating a visually appealing contrast. This method emphasizes the concentric growth rings, which are especially visible in cross-sections of the wood. Bark Weaving: Natural Bark Integration: The woven bark band encircling the midsection of the piece is a key feature that adds both textural contrast and an organic feel. The bark is likely sourced from the same or a complementary type of wood, ensuring harmony between the different elements of the piece. Weaving Technique: The bark is carefully stripped, processed, and woven by hand into a continuous band. This process requires a high level of skill to achieve a uniform, tight weave that complements the turned form of the ash wood. The weaving not only serves as a decorative element but also symbolizes the intertwining of nature and craftsmanship. Aesthetic and Functional Design Form and Shape: Symmetrical Design: The piece is crafted with a balanced, symmetrical form that is both pleasing to the eye and functional. Its rounded, bowl-like shape suggests it could be used as a vessel or simply as a decorative object. The smooth, continuous curves reflect the meticulous turning process, where the wood is shaped on a lathe to achieve this fluid form. Hollowed Interior: The hollowing process is done with precision to ensure the piece remains light yet retains its structural integrity. The interior is smooth, showcasing the care taken during the hollowing process, which is especially challenging when working with scorched wood. Contrast and Harmony: Visual Contrast: The deep, rich tones of the scorched ash provide a striking backdrop for the lighter, more organic texture of the bark weaving. This contrast draws attention to the craftsmanship involved in both elements—the precise turning of the wood and the intricate weaving of the bark. Harmonious Blend: Despite the contrast, there is a harmonious blend between the different materials. The natural elements of wood and bark are unified through the craftsman’s vision, creating a piece that feels both modern and rooted in traditional techniques. Symbolism and Artistic Expression Connection to Nature: Organic Aesthetics: The use of natural materials such as ash wood and bark ties the piece to the earth, reflecting a deep respect for the natural world. The scorching technique, reminiscent of ancient Japanese wood preservation methods like Shou Sugi Ban, adds a cultural and historical layer to the piece. Symbol of Resilience: The scorched wood symbolizes resilience and transformation, as the wood is subjected to fire yet emerges with a new, enhanced beauty. The woven bark could be seen as a metaphor for the interconnectedness of life and nature. Craftsmanship as Art: Artistic Expression: This piece is not merely functional; it is a form of artistic expression. The craftsman’s choice to combine these techniques and materials results in a work that speaks to the beauty of imperfection, the passage of time, and the blending of different traditions and skills. Unique Character: Each piece created with such methods is unique, with the scorching process and natural variations in the wood and bark ensuring no two pieces are exactly alike. This uniqueness is highly valued in artisanal crafts, making the piece not just a decorative item but a collector’s item. Practical Considerations Display and Care: Display: This piece would be well-suited for display in a prominent position where its detailed craftsmanship can be appreciated. Whether placed on a mantle, a shelf, or a centerpiece on a table, it commands attention and invites closer inspection. Care: The scorched finish should be handled carefully to avoid scratching or damaging the surface. It can be cleaned with a dry, soft cloth to remove dust. The bark weaving, being more delicate, should be kept dry and free from excessive handling to maintain its integrity. In summary, this scorched ash piece with bark weaving is a sophisticated blend of natural materials and expert craftsmanship. It not only serves as a beautiful decorative object but also as a representation of the intricate relationship between nature and artistry. The piece embodies a respect for traditional techniques while also embracing a contemporary aesthetic, making it a versatile and meaningful addition to any collection. This was a collaboration piece I done with a well renowned basket weaver called Kathleen McCormack from longwood co Meath. This piece is 240mm high x 340mm wide.
