Edit:. You need a spacer for the center hole in your gear. It’s a black circle. We didn’t have that part so we just used our extra black plastic bushing that you put between the drag link and gear…the screw was garbage and wouldn’t tighten up. Use the cap but replace the screw with a bolt and cover the thread with loctite. This FINALLY WORKED!!!! THE STEERING IS FINALLY FIXED! PAY ATTENTION TO ALL OF THE BUSHINGS IN YOUR STEERING PARTS. THEY WEAR DOWN, REPLACE THEM. IF THEY WEAR DOWN YOUR GEAR WILL SLIP AND STRIP YOUR SHAFT. Hope this helps someone. This is probably our 8th steering shaft in 3 months for our Huskee 38 inch cut riding mower…I know…why didn’t we give up already? I wonder that too. We’re making a final attempt to fix it this weekend and I’ll update this weekend if it works. I’ve spent many late night hours researching blue prints, watching how to videos, and reading through user reviews….this is where we’re at and I going to tell you the next step we’re taking to fix it..stop replacing just the shaft and hex bushing. Inspect EVERYTHING in the gear area. Make sure the bar that connects the front tires isn’t bent. Use the original MTD products if possible. Replace with actual MTD products if possible. We’re replacing the 738-0919b steering shaft, we’re replacing the screw and cap that twists into the shaft underneath 9710 1309 9480389(DO NOT try to home make a new cap..it doesn’t work. We’re learning through trial and error. Just buy the correct screw and cap), we’re replacing the hex bushing MTD 941-0656a, we’re replacing the steering gear MTD part, possibly the ball joint MTD 923-0448a, and we’re replacing the rubber/plastic bushing the goes between the gear and steering drag link(VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT!!!!) I’m almost 100 % positive replacing all of this together will fix the stripping steering shaft! If possible look underneath at everything when turning the wheel, especially around the gear…is your hex bushing popping up under the steering shaft?(that will strip it), is there too much play where you steering drag link meet?(that will strip the rod), are your ball joints bad?(that will strip the rod), is the black bushing where the drag link and gear meet falling apart (that will create too much play and strip the bushing)…fix all of this and I’m almost positive the steering problem will be completely fixed…replace that gear when you replace the shaft..buy the steering cap and screw, buy the little black drag link bushing, grease your gears it’s metal on metal, make sure the ball joints aren’t shot. DO NOT try to rig your own screw and cap…you may be missing a washer between the steering shaft and hex bushing..good luck getting a replacement on Amazon though..mines lost in transit..lastly, get yourself a beer! Your gonna need it!!!! That screw takes a lot of soaking to get it off…
